Have a challenging woodworking project?
  You've found the right guy!

I've been at it since 1978; building all sorts of wood projects from staircases to yacht galleys.

I mostly work in wood, but I often and incorporate other media like glass and decorative metals.

I have a fully equipped shop just off of the 5 at Avery Parkway.

My goal is always for the work I do to look as if it's always been there.

One of my specialties is tricky staircase projects. (See photos on this page.)

I do a lot of consulting for contractors, architects homeowners and millwork shops.

I teach woodworking classes nation wide and offer private lessons as well.

Check out my books page. I'm currently working on my fourth book due to be released next year.

What I do:

When I mention I can build anything you can dream up, let’s just say I have yet to meet a project I couldn’t eventually figure out.

How I work:

It can be really fun to translate a concept into three-dimensional reality. Perhaps it’s the chest you’d like to have to protect grandma’s china, the sculpture that really needs a nice pedestal, the staircase you’d like to update, or the new appliances you’d like to install on your boat. Use your imagination.

·       How do I know I’ll get what I truly want when I might not be sure myself?

·       How much will it cost?

·       How long will it take to build?

·       What about incorporating glass? Metal? Stone? Lighting? Mechanical devices?

Getting Started:

During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss the function and style of the project. It’s very helpful if you have sketches or photos of what you envision. Even if it’s a photo of something entirely unrelated, you might like the style of the piece or some detail; perhaps just the color.

Everything I do is subject to your prior approval. Depending on the complexity of what you have in mind, I start by sketching and then drawing it, perhaps even building a mock-up or two until we get it right. Along the way, we choose materials and finishes. Once we both understand the scope of the project, we agree on a cost proposal.

You can start the process by collecting some photos and just thinking about why you respond to a particular style or color. I’ll take it from there.

Looking forward to meeting with you,

Lon Schleining

The photo above and the slide show are taken of a quarter-sawn walnut staircase I built a couple of years ago in Brentwood.
